No more room of her own

What’s so great about an open office plan? Well, it can make a bunch of money for the interior design firm that reconfigures the floor. Also the company that supplies the rows of picnic tables that are supposed to give a person a sense of personal space. And the business saves a ton on rent and heat. But what about the people who are supposed to work in that environment? What about the creativity that’s supposed to positively explode with all this close-quarters-collaboration? AdAge asked Katie Keating and Erica Fite (along with other industry folks) what we thought about the trend towards open offices. (Spoiler Alert: not much.)

Erica pointed out that studies since the 1960s have shown that rats living in crowded open spaces exhibit unusual behaviors including occasionally attacking each other and pregnancies not carried to term. Um, good thing we’re not rats? Katie added that open offices are great… for encouraging people to work at home. However, the best thing about the nomadic office lifestyle is that no one ever knows where to look for you!
